SUVs are the craze these days. It also explains why a huge number of Vitara Brezzas find new homes each month in India. Other of its ilk, like the Nexon as well as EcoSport aren’t far behind as well. This brings us to the topic of compact SUVs. While the flurry of launches this year may have abated, the new year definitely promises more. The onslaught will start as early as January 2019 and continue the whole year. Here is a list of three SUVs that we know will be launched in January-February 2019. The launch date of one SUV here is confirmed.
Tata’s all-new product devoid of any legacy will be the Harrier SUV. Based on a modified platform of the Freelander 2, the Harrier will be one of the most ambitious projects by Tata Motors. The Harrier will take on established players like the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass. It has a Jeep-derived 2.0-litre diesel engine that makes 140PS of power and 320Nm. A new 6-speed manual, also borrowed from Jeep, is available. Downsides should include the noisy engine as well as no automatic option. Since it is a Tata, initial quality issues faced by motoring journalists were also recorded. However, when the production model arrives, we are sure Tata may have ironed the niggles. The Tata Harrier price in India (expected) will be between Rs 13-16 lakh, ex-showroom.
Launch date: January 23, 2019
Well, this SUV is the cousin of the Renault Captur. However, it has been extensively redeveloped for the Indian market. In fact, the Kicks that will be sold here is bigger and bolder than what Nissan sells outside. Wheelbase too has gone up in the process and there is decent seating capability for four grown-ups. There is no all-wheel drive option at the moment. In fact, none of the Nissan SUVs in India offer this. Moreover, the engine is the tried and trusted 1.5-litre diesel unit that is capable of getting the job done. There is also a 1.5-litre petrol. We like the equipment on offer but feel that there definitely could be more, given the premium positioning. Lack of an automatic option might hurt its prospects but the Kicks will compete with the Creta as well as the aforementioned Harrier. The Nissan Kicks price in India is expected to be Rs 11-15 lakh, ex-showroom.
Launch date: Sometime in January 2019
The XUV300 has been getting rave reviews just for the way it looks. Not only is the car more premium looking but also boasts many segment-first features. It is a sub-4m SUV but packs in seven airbags, all-wheel discs, dual zone climate control and an 8.0-inch touchscreen system. It also boasts a sunroof. Mahindra will bring in both petrol and diesel engines. However, there is no automatic option at the moment. Neither is there all-wheel drive. Mahindra also seems to have upped the quality game with this compact offering. This one will compete with the Tata Nexon, EcoSport as well as the Maruti Vitara Brezza. The Mahindra XUV300 price in India is expected to be between Rs 8-12 lakh, ex-showroom.
Launch date: First half of February 2019
