After opening sales of the NRG variants last year, Tata Motors has quickly updated the model line-up. The manual-only Tiago NRG is joined by a petrol-AMT now. The Tata Tiago NRG AMT price in India is Rs 6.20 lakh, ex-Mumbai. This price is approximately Rs 45,000 over that of the manual and the new trim sits between the petrol and diesel manual versions. Tata dealerships have started taking bookings for Rs 11,000 while the deliveries will start from next month. The Tata Tiago NRG AMT will go up against the Maruti Celerio X AMT.
So finally an automatic option for the rugged Tiago, eh?
Yes, it was an easy thing too. Mechanically the Tiago and NRG are the same save for a few changes. Adopting the automatic powertrain isn’t much of a hassle either. The Tiago’s 5-speed AMT is paired to the 84PS/114Nm, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine is also available with a 5-speed manual configuration. Tata also offers the Tiago NRG with a 70PS/140Nm, 1.05-litre diesel motor and a 5-speed manual.
Other traits of the regular vehicle continue in the Tata Tiago NRG AMT. This includes a rugged outside presence complete with faux skid plates, cladding, roof rails, 180mm ground clearance, 14-inch alloys and other. Inside, there is a contrast stitching, NRG badges and touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The Tata Tiago itself is bound to get a facelift soon. Tata will slap on a new grille, headlights and switch to 15-inch wheels too on the lower trims. There will be changes on the inside too. The biggest change will be the switch to BS-VI for the petrol motor while the diesel will be axed. The decision to remove the diesel from the line-up is being done because it will prove to be too costly to market. Small diesels in other manufacturer portfolios will also be dropped due to the same reason.
