With the new Skoda Rapid, Skoda India has been on a roll. The bookings are full and this entry-level Skoda in India has been helping fuel many a ambition of upgrading to a proper sedan. Heck, it is even giving other sub-4m sedans a run for their money. Skoda India has now added to the value-for-money proposition by bringing in an automatic version. The Skoda Rapid TSI automatic price in India starts from Rs 9.49 lakh. This is a premium of Rs 50,000 over the corresponding manual version. The top model is for Rs 13.29 lakh. If you see the price list, apart from the base version Skoda has been demanding a premium of Rs 1.2 lakh over the manual for the automatic variants. Bookings had started quite some time ago whereas the deliveries are being promised right now.
What’s new in the Skoda Rapid TSI automatic?
Technically nothing. However the addition of a torque converter can definitely be considered a new. This could be the first time this transmission has been used in a Skoda car in India. The Skoda Rapid TSI automatic uses 999cc, 3-cylinder engine that makes 110PS of power and 175Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed torque converter. Skoda claims a fuel efficiency of 16.24kmpl, down from the manual’s 18.9kmpl.
There is no change to the feature list or even the way the Rapid looks. Certainly, there are no automatic badges too and one can only tell the manual and automatic machines by looking at the gear lever. Skoda hopes to attract a wider set of audience for the Skoda Rapid TSI automatic. As our market progresses towards electric cars, acceptance of automatics will be a key. Especially given that electric cars are all automatic in nature.
The Rapid auto will slug it out with the Vento, Ciaz, Yaris, Verna, and the City.
