At the Auto Expo 2018, Maruti Suzuki showed off the Concept Future-S. While it was speculated this could be the next-gen Maruti Alto, now it indeed looks like the car is going to be ready sooner than expected. Yes, the diminutive Alto has been forgotten with the advent of the new Swift, Dzire and other cars in the Maruti fold. However, given that the Kwid’s popularity is on a rise, it is fair that one of India’s largest selling car should get an update now. Recently, the concept car was spotted testing in India.
Sounds interesting! Give me more details on the next-gen Maruti Alto
The spy images show only a few details. However, the outstanding fact is that the next-gen Maruti Alto will look more like a mini-SUV than the small hatchback it is now. The elevated ground clearance as well as the tall boy design are prominent. There are also roof rails and a look at the rear glass shows that it is a raked unit. Not only this, there is also the centrally mounted instrument cluster. We have seen before that vehicles with these type of instrument cluster positioning haven’t done well in the market. For Maruti’s sake, we hope the Alto does well.
This Alto will be compliant with the upcoming crash safety norms. To this very effect, there will be a driver airbag, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt reminder, high speed warning and rear parking sensors on offer. Moreover, a passenger airbag will be offered on the top trims as well. A touchscreen infotainment system from the WagonR will likely make its way down to the Alto too.
The engines will be BS-VI compliant and will most likely be the 800c and 1.0-litre 3-cylinder units. Power and torque will slightly go up in the process as will efficiency. Maruti may also offer a CNG with the 1.0-litre unit. Not only this, there will be a 5-speed manual and AMT options available. Expect a global debut at the 2020 Auto Expo if not before.
