It is finally here! The new Mahindra Thar has been showcased in India, sans the camouflage. To say that this looks like a mini-Jeep Wrangler is an understatement.The new Thar is based on an all-new third generation ladderframe chassis. It has got all the missing bits in place from the outgoing model, making it quite a compelling option for enthusiasts. A bunch of new engines too have been revealed and these are going to mated to manual/automatic transmissions. This new Mahindra will be launched in India on October 2, another momentous day for the country – Gandhi Jayanti. Bookings should start in a few days from now and we will get you all the details about the same.

New Mahindra Thar specs, features
The second-generation Mahindra Thar will be made out of the company’s Nashik plant. The Thar will come in six colours – Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Napoli Black, Aquamarine, Galaxy Grey and Rocky Beige.There are LED headlights, DRLs, tail lights. The tail lamps boast a Thar engraving. On offer, externally are three roof options – soft-top, hard-top and convertible. There is also the 18-inch alloy wheels on offer. Inside, the dark upholstery with seemingly hard-wearing plastics are available. Two variants – AX (for hard-core off-roading) and LX (more for lifestyle).
Mahindra has given the Thar with sporty front seats that behave more like bucket units. There are four front facing seats and the third row is side-facing. The new Mahindra Thar also boasts a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The music system has its speakers mounted on the roof. A semi-digital instrument console is on offer and this TFT shows the driver the adventure statistics display. This means the tilt angle, approach, g-forces and more. The infotainment system itself can be paired with a smartwatch and also displays upcoming Mahindra Adventure events.
What about engine options in the new Thar?
The powertrains are again all-new. This includes the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that makes 130PS of power and 320Nm. With the AX, one gets only a 6-speed manual while with the LX, a 6-speed torque converter is given. As for the petrol engine, it is a 2.0-litre turbopetrol motor that is good for 150PS and 320Nm. For the AX trim, there is a 6-speed manual while for the LX, only a torque converter is offered. 4×4 low-range transfer is available as standard in all the variants.
Mahindra has been focusing big on safety, it is clear that the new Thar also gets many safety aids. Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors are all standard. What’s more, customers of the automatic variants will also get hill-hold, hill-descent as well as ESP. Cruise control on the steering is also being offered.
The expected price for this car should begin from Rs 8 lakh. Looking at the images, specs and features, we can only say R.I.P Jeep Wrangler.
