Ever since the all-new WagonR was introduced in India a couple of months ago, the buying population asked where the CNG version was. Maruti said that it was coming and now, here it is. The Maruti WagonR S-CNG price in India is Rs 4.84 lakh for the LXi trim and Rs 5,000 more for the LXi (O), ex-Delhi. It is likely that the Vxi as well as the Zxi trims could also get a CNG option at a later stage. Bookings have already started at dealerships in CNG-available states in India. Deliveries will be fulfilled in a couple of weeks.
Tell me more about the Maruti WagonR S-CNG
The Maruti WagonR S-CNG will initially be available with the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine. The CNG version can only be availed with a manual transmission. This CNG tank can hold 60 litres of gas while the claimed mileage is 33.54km/kg. As is usually the case with CNG engines from Maruti, the power output goes down and here the motor produces 59PS/78Nm. If one uses the vehicle in petrol mode, the ECU bumps up the power to an additional 10PS and torque increases by 12Nm.
Maruti says that the shift between petrol and CNG is seamless as a dual ECU is used. As far as safety features are concerned, the LXi comes with a driver airbag as well as ABS with EBD. For additional Rs 5,000, one gets a passenger airbag as well as seatbelt with pre-tensioners. We will happily put our money on the latter. The CNG trims come with a company warranty and Maruti says that accessing the spare tyre has also been made easier. Not only this, the dynamics of the vehicle will not be affected as the CNG cylinder is placed lower to the ground.
The new Maruti WagonR S-CNG will compete with the Hyundai Santro CNG. The latter is available with a mid-spec Sportz trim and is a bit better kitted than the WagonR.
