The Maruti Suzuki Eeco began life as the Versa with a certain Big B and his son advertising the car for its spaciousness. The car was later christened as the Eeco and as per Maruti’s claims, has found five lakh new homes. The five lakh sales milestone for the Maruti Suzuki Eeco comes after almost eight years of its launch.
Details of the Maruti Suzuki Eeco
The Maruti Suzuki Eeco is one of the most affordable people movers available. In fact, it is even more affordable than the Datsun Go+ MPV. It has a van shape and gets sliding doors for the middle row. Maruti offers the Eeco with a five or seven seat configuration. While a standalone 1.2-litre 72PS and 101Nm producing engine is standard, there is also a CNG option. Maruti claims a mileage of 16,2kmpl from the petrol and 21.8km/kg from the CNG. Overall, the latter contributes to only 16 per cent of the overall Eeco sales. This could be due to the higher price for the factory fitted unit as compared to fitting one from outside.
Not only is the Maruti Suzuki Eeco offered in a passenger vehicle guise but there is also the cargo as well as ambulance variants available. The Maruti Suzuki Eeco was touted to replace the high selling yet crude Omni. However, this hasn’t happened so far. Maruti provides no safety aids with either of the cars. It is likely that the new Maruti Wagon R seven seater may eventually replace the Eeco. This Wagon R will be not only spacious but also more fuel efficient. It will also have more safety aids like dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. However, it will only see the light of the day sometime next year. It will be interesting to see the migration of Eeco customers to the Wagon R.
