Maruti Jimny production starts in India; 5-door version to be launched

The rival to the Mahindra Thar is arriving soon. After denials by Maruti Suzuki, it now looks like there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. A leaked photograph from what appears to be the Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar shows the new Maruti Jimny assembled and ready. However, this image is of the 3-door model. Maruti Suzuki have assembled these 3-door models for a possible export. Earlier, MSIL had imported kits from Japan. In India, the company will likely bring in the 5-door version though the cost of engineering the same will go up. The Mahindra Thar has been doing extremely well and M&M hopes to have a 5-door model out as well. The latter will increase public interest and help them make their minds on the Thar being the only car in the garage.

When will the Maruti Jimny be launched in India?

The launch is highly possible some time next year. Perhaps the second half. Maruti Suzuki Jimny test mules have been spotted but these again have been 3-door ones. The Maruti Jimny will have a 1.5-litre K-series motor from the Ciaz and in the same state of tune. It will get a 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmission options. The engine will make 105PS of power and 138Nm. A low-range, 4-wheel drive system is standard on the Jimny as are 16-inch wheels.

There are dual airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control and more safety aids at disposal. The Maruti Jimny price in India is expected to start from Rs 8.5 lakh as the company is looking to heavily localise it. There could be multiple variants given the transmission options. Unfortunately no diesel engine will be available or even a CNG. The latter is a good thought and might get in more customers since no other 4×4 offers one at the moment.
