MG will enter the Indian market this year. The company has already got its plant in Gujarat up and running, partly thanks to the erstwhile General Motors India management. Last year, MG was busy conducting roadshows and educating the masses about their products. This year is the time to go on the offensive in full steam. MG has teased its first SUV for the Indian market and the vehicle will be called Hector. The MG Hector will be launched in India in mid-2019.
Specifics of the MG Hector
Unfortunately there are only a few details available at the moment. The MG Hector is sold as the Baojun 530 in the Chinese market as well as under different nameplates in the Asian region. What we know and what few of the spy shots share is that this will be a large five seater, almost Harrier size. It will have equipment like an around view monitor, parking assist, a vertically stacked infotainment cluster, powered leather seats, sunroof and an electric parking brake. The upholstery will be done in black and beige.
It is likely that the MG Hector will be offered with two engine options at launch. Both the engines will be BS-VI compliant. The petrol motor will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit and should offer around 150PS of power. In the meanwhile, the diesel will be the familiar 2.0-litre from the Harrier and Compass. However, its power output will be closer to the Jeep Compass than the Tata Harrier – 173PS. Both the engines will be offered with 6-speed manual and automatic options.
The bigger challenge for MG Motors will be its Chinese roots. The brand is currently owned by Chinese owners. It will be hard to shake off the general perception about Chinese products that we have in India. However, here is hoping that MG Motors has a great innings in the Indian market. Their first product will go up against the Hyundai Tucson as well.
