Remember the Ford-Mahindra joint venture we had carried a few years ago? Yes, its been a few years but since then the final word was supposed to have been done in December last year. Unfortunately that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Both Mahindra and Ford have now announced that they are calling this alliance off. The reason cited is revenue wherein both the manufacturers feel that there isn’t enough money to be made. Moreover, the investment in this JV has exceeded the expectations. Due to coronavirus and the subsequent slow-down, the project has been shelved. But, not all is lost. There are advanced projects that the coalition was working upon. These have been termed feasible and will be launched accordingly. The details of the same have been given below.
Ford-Mahindra new cars that will be launched
First up, the new Ford EcoSport will sport a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine from Mahindra. This is due to happen sometime later this year. As it is, the EcoSport needs an all-new look too. Wonder if Ford will do anything on that front. There is also another Ford C-segment SUV that is said to have been worked upon by both. This in short is an XUV500 rival. This car will be launched by August next year. The Ford Aspire electrification isn’t happening and the project has been shelved.
As for Mahindra, they will be launching the all-new Scorpio, XUV500 this year. There is very less influence of Ford in these cars apart from the software for the connected car experience which they share with the American carmaker. Both the companies are hopeful that these small side-by-side projects work for them as these will ensure development costs stay low. Manufacturing can also be leased to Mahindra that has more capacity and which is currently underutilised. Ford India will continue to operate in the near future as an independent entity.
