Datsun to go on an offensive in India; might bring the mi-Do

Datsun India has been quite for sometime. The company, as reports suggest, is looking at getting new products into the Indian market. This will include an SUV which slots in below the Rs 10 lakh mark and understandably will be sub-4m. Nissan-Datsun aim to distinguish themselves by this re-organisation. Vehicles below Rs 10 lakh will be handled by Datsun and above by Nissan. The former also says that there will be new launches every six months from the company here on.

Datsun Go Cross concept

A few years ago, the company had showcased the Go Cross Concept. It is expected that the new SUV will be loosely based on this. Expect slightly butch styling and obviously more features than the current crop of its cars. The mi-Do concept that was showcased in Russia recently can also be a good candidate for the Indian market. The mi-Do exists as a large hatchback but under sub-4m. The concept though has higher ground clearance, more features and a bigger engine. Datsun has used a 4mm thick underbody aluminum protection to shield the engine, transmission and fuel tank from the rough elements. The mi-Do concept’s roof gets an extra set of lamps for night excursions. The car is painted with anti-scratch protective body coating  in a camouflage pattern. Of course, the seats can be flipped too for additional luggage space. This 5-seater car will be positioned above the Go.

While the above are speculations, what we know for sure is that the Go and Go+ facelifts will be launched this year. Every festive season, Datsun ensures that it brings out something different within the existing portfolio. We expect the new Go and Go+ to have more creature comforts. The refreshing thing will be the addition of ABS and dual airbags to the mix. Expect a slight price rise though with these additions.
