It is official! Bajaj Auto will be launching its new electric scooter brand on October 16, 2019. The Bajaj electric scooter brand will likely be called Urbanite whereas the first scooter from the faction will be the Chetak. Yes, Bajaj is going to dig into history and get the ol’ brand name. Might be for nostalgia or some other purpose.
Tell me more about this new Bajaj electric scooter brand
You’ve got us in a quandary. Currently, not much is known except for the fact that it will mostly spawn off like the Pulsar, Discover and Platina brands. The only difference might be that we could only see electric scooters from here. Or perhaps just the fact that only electric vehicles overall. The Bajaj Chetak in the meanwhile has been spied with a retro-classic design. Moreover, it will have LED headlights, turn indicators as well as tail lights. Conventional telescopic front suspension and a monoshock at the rear were seen already. Bajaj will offer a disc brake in the front and drum at the rear, interlinked by combined braking. It is likely that the underseat storage will be in the region of 21 litres. Lest, we forget an all-digital instrument console too was spotted.
As far as the powertrain goes, we expect a 20kW battery that should bring in about a range of 120km. The top speed of 90kmph should also be doable for the new Bajaj Chetak. Moreover, we expect Bajaj to give different riding modes too. The Bajaj Chetak electric scooter price in India could start from Rs 95,000, ex-showroom. This will ensure that it will take up the fight properly with the Ather 450, a scooter that it was benchmarked against. With the entry of Bajaj, it will likely open the avenues for other makers who have so far shied away from electrics. This will include Yamaha, Suzuki and others.
