Well, the Thar is a relatively new product in Mahindra’s portfolio. However, apart from the engine, everything harks back to the old Jeep styling. Mahindra definitely plays on this and has been selling the Thar for close to five years now. A new 2020 Mahindra Thar was spotted testing recently. If the recently launched Force Gurkha Xtreme is a splitting image of the G-Wagen, then the new Thar is an impersonator of the Jeep Wrangler. It should be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo.
New bits about the 2020 Mahindra Thar
While the 2020 Mahindra Thar that was spotted testing had no bumpers in place, rest of the bits look production ready. The new Thar looks longer, wider and could also have a bigger wheelbase than before. The wheels look to be 17-inchers as well. An all-new platform underpins the vehicle. Previously, the Thar was considered as a full blown off-road vehicle, this time around, it should hopefully have some tarmac capability as well.
We believe an all-new engine will underpin the 2020 Mahindra Thar. Currently, Mahindra uses a 2.5-litre diesel engine that makes 105PS and 247Nm. This engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The new engine will be a derivative of the Marazzo’s unit and could make around 120PS and 270Nm. A new gearbox too will be a part of the change. Moreover, this powertrain will be BS-VI compliant too.
Due to the new safety norms, the Thar will also be crash tested. Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt warning, rear parking sensors and speed limit warning will be standard. Speaking of which, the interior too will be much more advanced than the bare bones it is right now. The 2020 Mahindra Thar will likely get climate control, upmarket upholstery as well as better fit and finish. The new Mahindra Thar price in India could start from Rs 7 lakh. It will compete with the Force Gurkha Xtreme.
