Mahindra and Mahindra not only debuted the second-gen Thar in India but they also put up an auction for the car before its launch. The serial number one SUV rolling out of the production line was put on auction. Prospective customers can bid for it with the starting price set at Rs 25 lakh. Yes, you may say that the price is double of what ideally the Thar top end will be priced on-road. However, all this is for a noble cause. The proceeds of the auction will go to COVID-19 fighting organisations. In fact, based on the top bid, Mahindra will match the auction amount and donate. From the time the bid was opened 10 days ago, there have been more than 5,000 interests registered. Mahindra closed the bid last night and the second-gen all-new Mahindra Thar was sold for a staggering Rs 1.11 crore.
What’s so special in the all-new Mahindra Thar auction edition?
The all-new Mahindra Thar auction edition owner, Aakash Minda, will leatherette seats, his initials, and number one embossed on the VIN. Aakash who hails from Delhi, will also be allowed to have a colour of his choosing, fuel type and variant. A part of the auction money will be taken by Mahindra as the cost of the vehicle and the rest donated. The proceeds will go to Swades Foundation, PM CARES and Naandi Foundation – all of whom are involved with COVID-19 relief work.
This new Mahindra Thar will be launched in India on October 2. Mahindra will open bookings of the SUV from then. The new Thar has got petrol as well as diesel engines, with a 6-speed manual being standard whereas an automatic is available too. There are new engines as well – a 2.2-litre diesel that makes 130PS/300Nm and a 2.0-litre petrol that pushes 150PS/300Nm.
There is a passenger version of the new Thar but only 3-door. Mahindra has kitted the Thar with dual airbags, cruise control, ABS, G-meter, seat belts, speed alert warning, rear parking sensors and a reverse camera.
