Volvo Cars India has launched its smallest SUV offering, the XC40 in a single trim at Rs 39.9 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The Volvo XC40 is available in a single trim called the R-Design. This is the top-spec trim in the Volvo family. Volvo has said that the price is introductory and limited to certain units that the manufacturer brings in via the CBU route currently.
The Volvo XC40 is the first compact SUV for the Swedish car maker. It is based on the Common Modular Architecture or CMA as it is popularly called. Volvo currently has two running platforms – SPA on which the other XC vehicles are based on and CMA on which the XC40 is currently built.
Volvo designers have ensured that the XC40 does look like an SUV. Partly though and we feel that the Q3 is the most SUV-like in its segment. The signature Thor Hammer headlights are present here and unlike other Volvos, this one has a bit of an upright stance to it. Volvo has given the XC40 two-tone colour treatment and along with the LED tail lights, it looks very nice.
For the cabin, Volvo has made use of a simple uncluttered feel and this includes the large touchscreen infotainment system in the middle called Sensus. Volvo has introduced piano black inserts in the dashboard to give it an elegant feel, while the side of the touchscreen system have aluminium inserts. A 600W 13 speaker Harman Kardon sound system is being offered and the screen can also mirror a compatible android or apple phone. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, dual zone climate control, front as well as rear parking assist and a powered tail gate.
There is a single engine option as of now in the Volvo XC40 and it is a diesel. The twin-turbo 4-cylinder 2.0-litre D4 engine makes 190PS and 400Nm and is mated to an 8-speed automatic. Power is transferred to all four wheels through an Haldex AWD system. Eco, Dynamic, Comfort, Individual and Off-road are the modes that the engine offers.
Volvo offers seven airbags, Steering Assist which prevents collision with other vehicles, animals or pedestrians up to 50kmph, Lane Mitigation, roll stability control, adaptive cruise control, driver alerts, ABS along with EBD, Traction Control, Electronic stability control and more. The Volvo XC40 also got a five star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The Volvo XC40 will battle it out with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1.
