KTM India has been relentlessly teasing us enthusiasts. Their higher capacity 790 Duke is in the news right from the end of last year. There have been various launch dates speculated for this model as well. However, now we seem to have a definite timeline for the launch. We have said “seem” because there is still no official word from the company. However, a 790 Duke bearing a Karnataka temporary registration plate was spotted in India. This signals that the launch is around. Some snooping around and it was revealed that the model will be launched in India on September 23, 2019.
However, the slightly bad news trickling in is that this 790 Duke will initially be sold as a CKD. This means parts are shipped from Mattighofen and then assembled at Chakan. This will result in an increase in the price. A source tells us that the price will be Rs 8.5 lakh. This directly makes it expensive than the GSX-750 (4-cylinder) as well as the Z900 (4-cylinder). Compared to this, the KTM 90 Duke uses a 800cc parallel twin engine that boasts 105PS of power and 86Nm. This BS-IV motor (KTM doesn’t have a Euro-VI yet for the 790 internationally) is paired with a 6-speed, slipper-clutch assisted gearbox. Moreover, this KTM comes with different power modes as well as Super Moto ABS. Its kerb weight of 175kg should make it a proper pocket rocket likes it lower capacity siblings.
A quick shifter, Cornering ABS, launch control as well as traction control are unique to this middle-weight offering. KTM India will be banking on these features as only the higher-priced Street Triple RS as well as the Z900 RS offer these features in all. The display is a full TFT unit that allows one to pair their smartphone too.
